I enjoy cooking, and be creative in the kitchen, but I don't like to grocery shop. Yet for some reason, I need to do it on a regular basis. Buying food in Kuwait has been much different than back in Canada. We shop at both a local community grocery store, they are called co-ops (not like the store back in Canada) and also at Lulu-hypermarket. We go back and forth between the two as some things are cheaper or better at different ones. We have to go on Friday mornings, otherwise it is almost impossible to get your cart down the isle. Friday mornings are quiet because it is their holy day... so most have the day off and are resting or they are going to the mosque. The added bonus of going then is that we can also find parking, a big bonus!
Anyways, I may or may not have a HUGE problem with the way that produce is sold in Kuwait. They do not really understand the need to REDUCE REUSE OR RECYCLE... Also when you buy your food they put about 1 item per bag. It irritates me so much. Now I bring my own bags to the store, which they still don't understand it. Whenever I walk in and go to pay, the guys that bag my groceries always say "no plastic" at the same time. I must be the crazy lady who doesn't want to waste bags. But seriously I almost cry when I see others who buy tonnes of groceries and receive equal amount of plastic bags to bring all their food home in. Anyways... I figured I would show you a few pictures of how produce is packaged and sold.... don't matter what store, it's all done the same.

Here is the styrofoam boxes... lovely hay
P.S. That was one big Beet to my surprise in the box
My tomatoes... in styrofoam and tonnes of tape to keep them in
And here is a new one... cardboard boxes... and of course more tape.
There is the option if course to buy produce individually, but you have to put it in plastic bag to get it weighted... grrr more waste anyways, and it often costs more. But I do try to avoid the boxes as much as possible, as they drive me crazy....
Anyways, happy shopping back home...

How annoying. I remember seeing that when we visited. What if you used reusable produce bags to weigh individual produce? Would that work??
ReplyDeleteI know it is very annoying. I do use re-usable ones for myself, no one else does. So for carrots and cucumbers and few other veggies/fruit it works, but some other produce we are forced to buy the boxes :( I will figure it out one day :)
